Praise for AnySystem

29 Jul '06 - 05:14 by benr

Before I leave on vacation I just wanted to publically thank Dave G and the wonderful people at AnySystem. Several people have been extremely kind and donated equipment to me here and there over the years (namely Nathan Ingersoll who donated 4 Sun Ray 1's, Jeff Huber who donated some smart cards, and Jeffery Schmitz who graciously donated 2 JNI HBA's four years ago), but AnySystem is the only company thats donated gear to me. In years gone by they sold A5x00 arrays cheap enough to allow me to write my Veritas KickStart Series and LuxParse, and in the last 2 years they donated a SunBlade 1000, a replacement 21" CRT, and an Ultra2 to replace one of my dead cluster nodes. AnySystem has really gone above and beyond the call to help me continue to provide resources for the rest of the community and I am eternally greatful to them for all that they've done.

I second this. John and his crew @ AnySystem have been long-time SunHELP supporters and all-around Good People. My most recent acquisition from them is a D1K full of drives and a SCSI card to control it (along with more ducks!!!).

I highly recommend them to anyone who needs quality Sun hardware with excellent service and support behind it.

Yep. Absolutely reasonable prices. :)
The Photons, you mentioned, are they running in your den? I am thinking about buying one for me to toy around with but got the feeling that my power bill is gonna get out of control. :(

I’ve never quite understood Anysystem.com. Their prices seem pretty expensive for old hardware. I understand the joy of being given something free, even if old, but to actually buy any of their hardware seems like a waste.

For example, why would I buy this old SunBlade 150 – 650Mhz/ 512MB RAM/ 1×80GB HDD/ onboard PGX64 Video/ DVD for $1,195.00 when I could buy a brand new Sun Ultra 20 workstation that blows the hell out of the SunBlade for only $895?

You do realize that for less than the Blade 150, you can get a Sun Blade 2000 that will blow the 150 out of the water?

Some people also prefer SPARC processors to Opteron/x86-based systems. There are still some things (such as heavy I/O load) that SPARC boxes do better.

Bill, I’ll agree with that.
