Notes on SNMP & PHP5

Sorry I've been so quiet lately. A lot is going on but I don't think it would be wise to discuss right now, sure enough I'll share it all in the nearish future. But, I can say that my SIDEkick toolkit is part of it, in an abstract sort of way. I just tar'ed up SIDEkick 0.4-pre3. In order to provide all the PHP5 goodies that I wanted I've added Net-SNMP 5.3.0.1 and libXML2 2.6.23 to the stack, as well as upgrading Slony-1 to rc3.

I wanted to share a finding that might be useful to so of you. Getting PHP5 (5.1.2, 5.1.1, and current snapshots) to install properly has been a massive time consumer in the last couple of days. I could build it just fine but the install would fail with a warning from libtool and apxs error. After testing other versions I couldn't escape the problem and started testing the build with diffrent options in a methodical manner. Turned out to be a problem with SNMP support. Apparently I'm not the only one. I finally bit the bullet and did what I was resisting, I installed my own version of Net-SNMP from current stable source. I'm already duplicating Apache in SIDEkick, although I'm using 2.2.0 which is at least a decent reason, but I don't want to duplicate Net-SNMP. Reguardless, I installed Net-SNMP 5.3.0.1 and then configured PHP 5.1.2 to use that SNMP install rather than Solaris's included version (5.0.9) and without a hitch it worked beautifully. So, the moral of the story is, if you've been struggling with PHP5 SNMP support, try upgrading to the latest source and try it again. The only reason this problem was such a pita is because nothing during the build points to SNMP as the culprit, you just find it by way of trial-and-error.

Maybe that helps someone, maybe not. I wish I hadn't wasted 2 days finding it.
