Sun: The Month in Review

This has been a radical week. Even as an evangelist its mind-boggling. In fact, its gotten so crazy in the last 2 weeks that some of the zealots in our ranks are actually scratching their heads trying to get a grip on just how much has happened! Its out of control crazy change, at least for those of us on the outside. So what I want to do is try and outline just exactly what has happened and then we'll start sorting through things... hold on to your kilts.

Lets start four weeks back to get the most complete picture we can... so, starting on Nov 1st, 2005:

Nov 1st: Q1 FY06 results reported, revenues of $2.7B up 3.7%. Gross margin was up to 44.1%, an increase of 3.3% from last year. Even after aquiring STK Sun still has $4.4B in the bank. S&P reiterates a HOLD opinion.
Nov 2nd: Wyse and Sun teamup and announce a strategic alliance "to deliver end-to-end thin computing solutions".
Nov 2nd: Sun announces the T10000 tape drive at FORUM as a successor to the successful StorageTek T9940, which doubles capacity to a native 500GB and increases throughput to 120MB/s with support for both FICON and dual-port Fibre-Channel.
Nov 2nd: Sun Cluster Geographic Edition is added to the Java Availability Suite. 'SC Geo' allows you to create a (as boyd put it) a 'cluster or clusters' over a nearly unlimited distance. Check out SC Geo here.
Nov 8th: 'Sun Microsystems Finance' is renamed 'Sun Microsystems Global Financial Services' (SMGFS) and sets its sights on 'custom-fitted financing plans' for 'businesses of all sizes looking for flexible and affordable financing options'.
Nov 9th: At JavaOne Tokyo Sun announces Sun Java Studio Enterprise 8. 'Eliminating pricing barriers, Sun is offering this development platform, along with Sun Java Studio Creator, available at no cost to all Sun Developer Network (SDN) registered developers worldwide.' Nov 10th: Sun opens the doors of its Sun Solution Center for High Performance Computing (HPC) in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Nov 14th: The UltraSPARC T1 is announced. In parallel, Sun announces its 'Eco-Responsibility Initiative'. Read up on Eco-Hippy thingie here and drewl over the UltraSPARC T1 here.
Nov 15th: Sun announces contactless JavaCard.
Nov 15th: Sun and Oracle announce that Solaris 10 will become Oracle's 64-bit development and deployment enviroment of choice. After watching Linux releases come faster than Solaris releases at Oracle this is a big change.
Nov 16th: Sun releases Sun Studio 11 for free! No cost, no catch and its primed for 64-bit multithreaded development for AMD Opteron and UltraSPARC T1.
Nov 16th: ZFS is avalible! OpenSolaris Build 27 is made avalible as well as a Solaris Express: Community Release of B27a containing ZFS.
Nov 17th: Sun announces support for PostgreSQL on Solaris 10. Learn more about PostgreSQL here.
Nov 17th: Sun officially announces ZFS to the world.
Nov 17th: Sun officially announces a commitment to Xen.
Nov 17th: Sun announces that they've distributed over 3.3 million licenses for Solaris 10 and that the OpenSolaris community now has nearly 10,000 members. We're also reminded that 'Solaris Containers for Linux Applications' (the project formerly known as Janus) is still in the works, but no date or timeframe is mentioned. Solaris 10 Update 1 is also slated for December.
Nov 29th: Sun unviels the upcoming Sun Grid Storage Utility, in partnership with InTechnology Plc.. This extends the Sun Grid from CPU on demand to Storage on demand.
Nov 30th: Sun makes a major shift to free and open source software by announcing Java Enterprise System, Developer Tools and N1 Software are available at NO COST. Going even further, 'Sun has committed to open sourcing its entire software portfolio using industry-standard open source licensing models to allow customers to have easy and broad access to all of its source code.'

So, thats the low down on the Sun news and announcements this month that aren't just marketing junkets or "coming soon..." news.

Lets focus now on the most mind boggling of these, the announcement on the 30th.

Sun has now made the bulk of its software portfolio free and they've commited to open sourcing it all. That of course is in addition to its huge number of currently open projects and products such as OpenSolaris, OpenOffice, NetBeans, JXTA, and far more. But you can't really appreciate just the scope of this untill you look at whats actually be released. The "Java Enterprise System" suite branding can really be confusing at times I'll admit, at least at first, so lets look at a complete breakout of whats now no cost and being open sourced!: ("Java Enterprise..." branding names removed for clarity)

Yeah this has been a huge month for Sun, you’ve hardly been able to grasp one announcement when the next equally major announcement comes out. For me, oracle, postgresql, cluster software, sun studio and zfs are all massive leaps that should reaffirm and encourage new commitments to sun.
