USENIX, SAGE & LOPSA: Fate of the SAs Union

16 Nov '05 - 18:53 by benr

This entry is for System Administrators, if your not one don't bother yourself with it...

If you haven't been keeping up on politics your not alone. We've all got enough to worry about without bringing politics and bullshit into the mix, but nevertheless reguardless of your opinion of USENIX and SAGE the relationship has been in question for over a year now. In order to save you all some time I'm going to lay out the scoop as best as I understand it and supply you with some places to look to explore the issues more on your own.

I should probly point out that I'm the author of a forthcoming USENIX/SAGE 'Short Topics in Systems Administration' Booklet titled 'The Sysadmin's Guide to Oracle'. Does that have an impact on my opinion? Hell no, as you'll see, but nevertheless, in the interest of full disclosure I should probly state it.

Act I: 'Future Directions for SAGE': In June of 2004 the USENIX Board discussed a proposal to decide the future direction of SAGE. The proposal offered two options: (1) Disolve SAGE and fold all the existing SAGE activities and control into USENIX, or (2) Seperate SAGE from USENIX and effectively bootstrap the new organization with all sorts of provisions on how to split the organizations, establish the new one, split up funds and how to deal with future LISA confs including how to divide funds, establish SAGE as a co-sponsor, and all that jazz. The motion was passed unanimously by the 6 present members of the board (2 were absent). This vote started the proccess of figuring out how to split the two organizations. Read the USENIX Board June 2005 Minutes.[PDF]

Act II: 'Decision re SAGE': Earlier this month (Nov '05) it was announced on the USENIX website: "On October 28, a motion to split SAGE from USENIX was presented to the USENIX Board of Directors. That motion failed.' In June 2004 the yes vote set the wheels in motion, it was this vote that was to decide whether it happened or not, and the vote came down as a tie, which means the motion fails. The key reason why, as noted by Mike Jones, USENIX Board President (and Microsoft employee, not that it makes a diffrence) was that 'representatives of the independent SAGE failed to convince a majority of the USENIX Board that the plan had any reasonable chance of success'. Read the decision press piece here. But be clear, this vote was really about money not issues. Reading all this makes you feel like your reading divorce papers, and effectively thats what this is, a lot of "you've gotta get your own bank account, and you've gotta get your own lawer and this is your and this is mine, and blah blah blah". Thats important, I guess, but for a damned 501(c)(3) non-profit it seems way too frickin' political for my tastes.

Act III: Screw this, we're outta here: Following the above a new organization has been created: The League of Professional System Administrators (LOPSA). You can read the November 05 Memo/Announcement here. The memo states that they are 'an independent entity' but that they are hoping to 'pursue the reasonable alternatives proposed by members of the Usenix board and hope still to conclude an equitable and mutually beneficial agreement.' So, its unclear as to where to draw the line in the sand, reguardless they go on to state "However, we will no longer wait for it."

So... what does all this mean? I dunno. I suppose we'll just have to see what comes of it over time. But I think it's clear that SAGE & USENIX are useless organizations that do not serve the needs of the people they supposedly represent. SAGE has started up efforts in the past (such as SAGEwire and the SAGE certs) but they've never gone anywhere, they are started but not adopted widely enough and hense folks just loose interest. As I see it, what do these organizations really get you? A discount card to a bunch of confrences most people can't afford anyway, access to some mailing lists, and a pretty good magazine which sadly is half full of confrence reports. So, your money buys you a really expensive magazine and thats about it. At least, thats the way I see it.

What does SAGE and/or USENIX do for me, the SA. LISA isn't for me, nor are any of those confs... they are for people who can afford to go reguardless of who they are. I just can't see anything that they provide that doesn't require more money on top of dues. And don't even bother reminding me of the Salary Survey... you don't need SAGE to do a lame survey. In fact, feel free to go to SAGE.org or USENIX.org and tell me what value you see that doesn't require a credit card. So what does this make USENIX and SAGE? A really bad union... an organization that you belong to but don't know why, simply because having it on your resume is a good thing. At least, thats the way I've always looked at it, I tend to renew my memberships when updating my resume and thats it.

I'm not trying to say that USENIX and/or SAGE can't serve a purpose and can't be great... just that they aren't right now. Frankly, I don't know what the point of USENIX is actually, aside from SAGE.

What I want, and have wanted, is a strong organization that can bring together the profession of systems administration and help guide us all. Some of SAGEs efforts, long since dormant, such as the Code of Ethics, Job Descriptions, etc, where wonderful steps in that direction but we need to go much further. I think a useful organization, SAGE or LOPSA or whoever, should provide:

  • Guidelines: What does it mean to be a Jr. or Sr. or Systems Engineer? We've started down this path but the guidelines are a bit wishy washey.. How to we determine what those qualifications are and then allow admins to determine whether they meet that standard or not without having to pay for some stupid cert.
  • Comrodery: Non-technical support for admins. This is a tough job, many of us are alone with no co-workers. How do others do things? Manage time? Manage money? Find inspiration? Deal with conflicts? Relate to management and customers?
  • Career Counseling: This is a really big field with a lot of diffrent nitches. What if an organization could provide basic services to its members in the way of counseling to advise members of how they might guide their careers (as part of their dues)?

So on and so forth, you get the idea. I want an organization that works for me and provides real value that I can't get anywhere else. Sitting around drinking latte's and making motions and voting and playing politics is for saps with nothing better to do and I'm glad to see that the folks starting LOPSA are tired of playing the game and would prefer to get down to business, and for that reason I'm excited about what they are going to do. Sure, the name is stupid, but what are ya gonna do.

I did have a good idea for SAGE about a year or two ago though... basically it would be a bi-weekly or monthly PodCast hosted by a diffrent admin each time. It would be limited to 30 minutes in length and could be submitted by anyone. The content of the recording would be entirely up to the person submitting it, whether its project planning, or legal issues, or technical issues, or enviromental (cooling/power) issues, or retirement savings, whatever, anything that is of interest to a sysadmin. That, imho, would be really kool and be providing value and all at no cost.

Perhaps the most exciting element at play here is that there are a lot of good people at both SAGE and USENIX. Rob Kolstad and Rik Farrow, to name only two, are both great guys. These guys have some great ideas and are open to new ones. Why they aren't able to act concerns me. If a split such as this is needed to make things start happening and allow good people to really run with their ideas then I'm all for it.

Anyway, keep your eyes on systemadministrators.org, the LOPSA website, and see where this goes. When in doubt, keep your eyes on Mr. Doug Hughes. Anyone who does storage should know Doug, and personally, I trust him implicitly... untill I have a reason to disagree, if he's behind it, I'm behind him.

- - C O M M E N T S - -

Hi,

A few years ago, even before this split was considered, there was an election debacle. To make a long story short, I knew at that point that the Union thought more about itself then its members. I also agree that Rob is a great guy (and I’m sure there are other great senior members as well) as I have had communications with him. I look forward to see how this Union grows and what its goals will be. From what I read above, I like… I would also like to contribute in any way that I can to further this group of like minds. Please feel free to contact me for some help. I have joined as a charter member as a first step.

Regards,

Jeff Malloch
