Richard Stallman on OpenSolaris and LIcensing

Discussions have been raging on the OpenSolaris "Discuss" mailing list back and forth reguarding GPL and CDDL, namely around the issue of compatability. Everyone seems to have an opinion and some have said their piece and others are still having it out, but an interesting thing happened on Friday... Mr. Richard Stallman himself joined the discussion. He has, thus far, made only one post to the mailing list, however it was, I think, a good one. Normally I wouldn't make a blog entry reguarding a message on a list, however due to the lack of a complete archive of the list I thought it was important to post this in a more public mannor so that other members of the community who aren't on the discuss list had his insight.

    1.  Instead of rampantly speculating about what the FSF 
    website means when it says the CDDL and GPL are incompatible, 
    has anybody tried asking the FSF?

We say two licenses are "incompatible" when combining code released
under those two licenses into a single program is legally impossible
because any way of licensing the combination would violate at least
one of the licenses.

    2.  Many of us consider GPL/CDDL compatibility a prerequisite for 
    the Open Solaris project to flourish.

The current license of Solaris is a free software license, which means
it is basically ethical.  But it would be a more useful contribution
to the free software commnuity if it had a GPL-compatible license, and
I wish Sun would make that change.

			  Consider the wonderful cross-pollination between
    OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux, and the vast repertoire of the FSF.

*BSD and Linux don't belong in the same list, because *BSD are
operating systems.  Linux, however, is just a kernel.  If you're
thinking of the operating system in which Linux is used, then what
you've said is an understatement.  That system is not just cooperating
with our work, it basically *is* our work.  It is a variant of the GNU

Everyone has an opinion about RMS, but reguardless of how you feel, I thought that it was nice indeed. His point, namely about asking the FSF itself, is well taken, they are only an email away is we'd bothered, and to my knowladge none of us have. While you could probly read into him saying that OpenSolaris is "basically ethical", I shall choose not to and instead enjoy hearing Mr. Stallman use the words OpenSolaris, free software, and ethical in a single sentance. I would only take a minor exception to his remarking on "the wonderful cross-pollination", which seems to me to more often than not simply a way for Linux to steal *BSD's thunder repeatedly.

What I think is really kool is that Mr. Stallman would take the time to watch the discussion, join the list himself, and the participate in it himself. To become part of the discussion yourself, please feel free to join the mailing list and get in on the action.

When RMS talks about cross-pollination between BSD and Linux, thre is more to it than merely Linux “stealing *BSD’s thunder”. For example, OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and NetBSD all ship with gcc. As Linux becomes more and more important commerically, commercial organizations improve gcc and those improvement then ship with the BSDs.

From what I gather, they really don’t like using GCC, but that making a new BSD compiler is just too much work at the moment.

I wonder what would happen if Sun Studio ever got released under the CDDL.
