Patching Solaris 10
16 Aug '05 - 16:26 by benrIf your running Solaris10 and haven't patched yet, its time you did. Thanks to the integration of smpatch (Sun Patch Manager) into Solaris 10 you don't have to bother with all the pains of manually cross checking patch dependancies, warnings, notes, conflicts, and all that goop. SMPatch has been avalible for awhile, but plenty of shops weren't interested because it was an additional package and decided to just do it the old fashioned way. Well, no more. Now patching is error free, fast, and utterly painless. Just analyze, download, and update... and wouldn't you know it, the same tool can do all of that.
The following is an example of patching done on Solaris 10, running on an Ultra2 workstation (in preperation for SC3.1):

It doesn't get easier than that. You can easily and safely automate this if you choose to. Patching, the way it should be.
Note that (currently) you do not need to be a Sun customer to patch. There are some caviates to this, but you can get plenty of patches to keep you happy even without a support contract (which is worth having anyway). If you have a Sun contract its easy to specify that information to smpatch:

You might notice that when you are updating (applying the patches) that some patches complain about being against policy. Patches are all classified as being 'standard' or 'nonstandard'. Standard patches are your garden variety and safe to install via smpatch without much concern, just reboot as soon as you can to make sure everything is effective. Nonstandard patches on the other hand are ones that either are interactive during install, or associated with the properties: rebootafter, rebootimmediate, reconfigafter, reconfigimmediate, or singleuser. In otherwords, these patches shouldn't just be tossed into the system without a knowing eye keeping watch.

If you look up the patch above you'll see that is a patch for ibmf and requires an immediate reboot following install, which is why its against the default policy. Patches that are outside of the default policy should be downloaded (like above) but installed in single user mode or explicitely when you are not running in production. You can do this by setting the SMpatch 'patchpro.install.types' property and then updating, specifying which property types (such as 'rebootimmediate') should be applied. All this gives you fine grained control but doesn't consume days of your time, allowing you to keep up to date without fear and without lengthy outages that interfere with operations.

Even with the zones issue, this patching system is great for lots of Solaris users. Yet another reason why Solaris 10 keeps impressing me. It’s as if Sun had years of R&D just primed for bowling over the operating system industry like a big steam roller with rocket engines and big pointy teeth…oh yeah, that’s exactly what they did.Anon - 17 August '05 - 12:38
