Solaris Roadmap Update
12 June '10 - 04:29 by benrIf you didn't see it earlier this week in Robert Milkowski's blog, Oracle has provided an updated roadmap.
Simply it states the following:
- Oracle will continue to make OpenSolaris available as open source and Oracle will continue to actively support and participate in the OpenSolaris community
- Oracle is investing more in Solaris than Sun did prior to the acquisition, and will continue to contribute innovative technologies to OpenSolaris, as Oracle already does for many other open source projects
On the "Solaris Near Term Roadmap", they state that Solaris 10 Update 9 will come some time in 2010 focusing on platform support and Oracle product integrations.
OpenSolaris is slated for an update in the "1st half CY2010". It will be based on snv_134 and be called OpenSolaris 2010.??.
No surprises here. But given the lack of information, no surprises isn't so bad.
This does cause me to think I might have been wrong in my belief that Solaris 11 would arrive this year. I still think it's not a bad assumption, but if it doesn't come I'll be really curious as to what the heck Solaris Engineering is so busy working on.
It is good that oracle finaly decided to relase some information. The community is scared and wonder what oracle is actualy doing.
Perhaps they are working on the dreaded IPS and getting that up to GA Standard.
I know oracle would read your site quite offten. I just hope they remember that keeping the community informed of progress is the only way to improve relations.
Also yearly subscriptions to solaris should come down for personal use. Even if it only gives you forum and web support. Home users think why pay for windows XP every year for a NAS system.

finally something! been waiting far to long and I really don’t understand oracles rationality of allowing for so much insecurity with respect to both solaris and sparc. while the latter does not matter to us much, we need confidence clear time horizons for our solaris/open solaris deployments.come on oracle – get your corporate comm and pr in order. its not that hard!

I don’t see Solaris 11 coming out this year – as its going to be based on OpenSolaris as the gap between the two is now too great.That means that before Solaris 11 can come out OpenSolaris has to work, which is still a long way off. So when Solaris 11 will be out about a year after a working OpenSolaris is released, which according to current form will be 20XX.XX…

First half of 2010 gives them about another 18 days. Mayhaps OpenSolaris release is all ready to go and just waiting for the showman to announce amidst adulation and fanfare on the 24th. Else otherwise I fear references to 2010.H1 being changed to 2010.0x may well be paving the psychological roadmap for yet more slippage ;(I guess we shall just have to wait and see – something we’re very well conditioned to do by now…..

I just don’t believe a word of this stuff.Currently (since almost half a year now) in Germany you get:
1. hardly any quotes on hardware,
2. no educational prices,
3. no updates what so ever on the developer builds of Opensolaris,
4. not nearly as flexible service contracts as this was the case with sun
5. less information on how to do things (as blogging within Oracle seems to be a thing that is not desired)
6. etc. etc. etc.
If Oracle continues its silence we will just switch to other brands as far as hardware and operating system are concerned.
We have a yearly budget and we can neither wait until Oracle finally decides to get things sorted out nor can we (edu) pay commercial prices (if we are lucky enough to get even this offers). If Oracle does not value its educational basis, they will loose their basis. If thats what they want: far well, but without us.
Its a pitty after using Sun for well over 20 years now…

There are seven pages of slides that manage the art of filling up space and being vague, without actually spilling any details.Can one say “big corporation”?
Personally, the only thing that’s critical right now, is whether, like someone wrote above “the dreaded IPS” will make it into Solaris 11 or not.
I hope not. No matter how many bugfixes go into that “thing”, it’s so conceptually flawed, that it’s busted, even if all the current bugs are ironed out. That thing is hopeless.
If there is one single technology that could completely bust Solaris proper, and drive away long time users, it’s IPS.

IPS is exactly whats going to ATTRACT people to Solaris.Ux-admin – from some of your other posts it sounds like you are indeed from a big environment and have a lot of experience. However the tools like flash archives and such for doing patching are outright overkill for many shops. We do not have the cycles or pre-production environments available to do “patching” using these legacy tools.
The reality is right now linux admins can update their server with a simple command and for kernels a single reboot. For edge servers this could be a weekly requirement to stay protected. Solaris does not offer this ease of patch management and absolutely needs to.
IPS will be a major reason I can finally start recommending Solaris to new admins and will save everyone many hours of mundane admin work.

Flash archives are really easy, actually, it’s only one command to create a Flash™ archive, flarcreate(1M). And they can be installed over NFS. Really simple and fast.
Where things get tricky is engineering JumpStart™ to scale correctly and use Flash™ archives instead of provisioning systems package-by-package.
But once this is working, the biggest benefit is exactly to the small shops, which have way too much work to do, and usually not enough people to do it.
JumpStart™ + Flash™ saves tremendous amounts of time.

Well here is the ironic thing: I can now do things on Linux with RPM (configuration packages), something I am not able to do with IPS on OpenSolaris.
And I (and anybody else who ever wishes to encapsulate and automate configurations in packages) will never be able to do on OpenSolaris + IPS what I can do with Linux + RPM because IPS does not support scripting.
