ORACLE 11g R2 FOR SOLARIS X86!!! FINALLY!!!!!!

29 Nov '09 - 22:46 by benr

Let there be great rejoicing! Oracle 11g R2 has been released for X86!!! So snubbed was Solaris/X86 that there was no release for Oracle 11g (R1)... but that time has passed and R2 is available on BOTH SPARC & X86. w00t! Only 5 years of checking daily... I knew it would pay off eventually. ;)

Congratulations. You want to talk about snubbed? Oracle 11g R2 for OS/X or 11g R1. :-)

Ya, but OS X isn’t a top tier enterprise OS. I would expect it to come along much later in the process than Solaris/X86.

From what I’ve heard, Oracle only ports to OS’s that have secured financing from some entity… basically, partners have to convince them that they’ll make enough to fully subsidize and generate a profit from the effort. Word was that “Sun paid for” Oracle10g X86. That would explain why platform support seems erratic.

Great news, I guess those payments wont be necessary any more :-P

Streuth what I heard was true (in my post to last blog) :-)

This I think speaks volumes about their x86 commitment. Leaves me somewhat relieved.

Yep, that’s amazing. I’m celebrating from the Thursday. So, Solaris x86 will not die.

And what is even better. it installs on OpemSolaris (snv_127) just missing some crypto library somewhere. But the database is up an running.

And there is a a Client distro for 32 bits so i will try to install it on my Atom netbook too.

Now if Oracle would get off their duffs and support the S10×86-64 platform with the app server tools. As of right now they have no plan on porting the other Oracle software suite to s10×86-64. I consider this a sad token move that is more about leftover momentum (i.e. sun providing support in oracle porting 11g) than any commitment. If Oracle was committed to the s10×86 platform then we would see plans to port the new app server products and there are NONE (they have specifically told us they will not port it). It really is sad to see the lackluster support from software firms on s10×86 most notably when the SPARC side is sitting in limbo.

I found your website about a month ago and check it several times a day. It is by far one of the funniest sites that I have come across. I just wanted to say thank you for the laughs and keep up the great work!
