Oracle/Sun Deal Gets More Time
25 Nov '09 - 00:56 by benrJust an update on the acquisition front... Oracle gets more time to respond to EC antitrust concerns. "The deadline for a final ruling has been put back to Jan. 27 from Jan. 19, which amounts to six additional working days for Oracle to win over the skeptical regulator."
It's become crystal clear, for those not following the issue, that this is really all about MySQL. As I and others have sited repeatedly, the de facto standard MySQL engine for enterprise deployments is InnoDB which is already owned by Oracle, which really puts a big dent in the argument. All this makes you wonder, would Oracle have still acquired Sun if they didn't own MySQL? I tend to think, yes. Which makes that deal seem all the more ridiculous. All the same, Sun paid $1B for it, so the suggestion that Oracle should just let that entity break back off is even more ridiculous, not to mention just bad business.
I’m guessing this has more to do with putting the squeeze on Oracle on behalf of SAP than anything else. Like you say, Oracle already owns the database engine, and it’s not anyone and everyone can’t simply fork MySQL. I just hope this uncertainty doesn’t damage Sun and Solaris more than it already has.

I always was amazed how much Sun paid!Yesterday I heard Oracle were putting it’s DBs on the same release schedule for x86 as well as Sparc which is nice :-)

Where does all this SAP runs the EU conspiracy stuff come from? Just because the US govt works through being bought by big business doesn’t mean the EU is…Chris - 25 November '09 - 17:34
Claim, that Oracle acquisition of MySQL is anti-competitive is just ridiculous… These are different products: Oracle RDBMS is for high profile business applications, while MySQL is perfect for web 2.0. Surprising: EC accepted IBM buying 2 RDBMS makers, including Informix which was competitor to DB2!It all seems, that just one company is behind all these anti-Sun actions by EC…

Oracles position simply doesn’t add up. If MySQL was that much a sideline story, why don’t they put it aside, into a mysql founadtion for example. Mysql is a counterpart of this whole transaction because no public or private cloud needs Oracle RDMSDennis - 26 November '09 - 15:40
I’m really not sure that MySQL was the driving motivator behind their move to acquire Sun. Yes, its a very different product from Enterprise, small and light in comparison with large and powerful but I believe the answer lays with Suns transactional RAM work. If TRAM worked as well as they claimed it would, then it would essentially turbo charge any database that ran on it. Now imagine you are the worlds leading RDBMS vendor (Oracle), if a competitor came up with such a technology wouldn’t it be worth buying them up? Even if it was to make the technology disappear…...Nick Bown - 01 December '09 - 16:45
